Frequently asked Questions:
|
1. What kind of equipment do I need?
You probably already have all the necessary equipment; computer, modem, and windows based operating system.
2. Is the backup and storage of my data totally automatic?
Yes, it's fully automatic. You don't even have to think about it. The Remote Backup software will
automatically dial in to the backup server, initiate the encrypted/compressed backup, complete
the storage procedure and disconnect.
3. How long does it take to backup my data?
The Remote Backup system is very fast as it compresses your files to approximately 25% of their original
size before downloading them. Your first backup will take more time as all your selected data
files have to be transferred to the server. After that however the process is very quick as
only new files or the amendments within a file or document are required to be transmitted.
4. If I'm using a portable computer, can I save and retrieve my files from outside my office?
Absolutely. Simply ensure that your laptop or notebook is connected to a telephone line at the time of da
y that you have been scheduled for and the backup will take place. Alternatively, a backup can be
manually initiated at any time by simply clicking the "Backup now" button.
To retrieve files, simply click the restore tab and your computer will be connected to the backup
server to allow you to select the files you want to retrieve.
5. Is my information secure with Fort Knox Technologies remote backup service? Is it truly confidential?
Everything is completely confidential and adheres to the strictest security standards.
Before it even leaves your computer for storage on the backup server, your information is encrypted such that it cannot be accessed by anyone not in possession of your personally selected security key.
Our remote backup service offers higher security than most financial institutions doing business over the internet.
6. How is my data encrypted?
All the compressed client data is encrypted prior to being transferred to the backup server.
The Multi-Encryption feature ensures that Fort Knox Technologies back up service is the most
secure remote back up software available.
The following encryption algorithms are used.
The Blowfish algorithm uses a 448-bit encryption key and is the most secure of the available algorithms because of the long key length.
Triple-DES uses a 192-bit key length and provides very strong protection.
DES uses a 128-bit key length and provides strong encryption. This is typically the encryption strength used at banks.
AES 128 bit is the U.S. Gov Standard.
AES 192 bit and AES 256 bit which is the most secure.
7. Do I need to use my encryption code to perform the backup procedure or to change my backup schedule?
No. The security key is only required to retrieve files when furnished to clients on CD/DVD. (Or any other media).
8. Is there any way for you to find out what my encryption code is?
Definitely not.
For this very reason, you need to store your security key in a safe place. If you forget your key, not even Fort Knox Technologies will be able to aid you in restoring your data.
10. Who has access to my files?
You - no one else.
(Not even Fort Knox Technologies personnel)
11. Do you have enough space to store all your clients' data?
We have enough space to backup millions of megabytes of client data.
12. Can my files be accidentally erased?
No. Our systems require the presence of our system administrators before anything on our servers can be destroyed
13. Can you back up my network?
Yes. Our system has full network compatibility.
14. Is Fort Knox Technologies Backup protected against system/hard drive crashes?
Continuity of our clients' data is ensured by the use of RAID devices on the Remote Backup servers.
Further, all the data is backed up and moved offsite.
15. Where can I turn if I need help?
Technical assistance is available around the clock by email; simply send a message to Admin@fortknoxtechnologies.com and you'll receive an answer within 24 hours or phone during business hours
7am-6pm.
16. How are the backup schedules determined?
Backups are generally scheduled to take place after hours - when it is unlikely that your computers are in use.
17. Can the backup be done while I'm working on my computer?
Yes. You may, however, experience a slight decrease in the speed of some applications (and any open files will not be backed up).
18. What happens if the connection to the backup server is cut?
The Fort Knox Technologies software on your computer keeps track of everything that has gone through the system;
so when the connection is re-established, the backup procedure simply picks up where it left off.
19. Is there any risk of contamination by computer viruses on the backup server?
No. A virus is nothing more than a computer program which has to be executed. Since the data is compressed and
encrypted prior to being transferred to the backup server any virus would technically be "frozen". Our server
is thus immune to viruses in the client data.
